Deploy a canary. This technology also supports advanced, complex service ... Modern cloud platforms offer amazing capabilities for application developers. However, cloud services are hard to manage without employing Infrastructure as Code tools for automation. Traditional tools like CloudFormation, ARM templates, and Terraform use text-based formats, which tend to be tedious, repetitive, and cumbersome to reuse. What if instead of configuration files, you could use ... Both Terraform and Pulumi build a graph of resources, compare known state against a desired state, produce a diff, and then make API calls to apply that diff. The major difference is that Terraform uses a DSL (HCL) to define the desired state, whereas Pulumi uses a general purpose programming language (TypeScript, Python, Go etc).

Aug 13, 2020 · Pulumi, the underdog, vs. HashiCorp, the heavyweight. Pulumi has gained a couple hundred customers since it first launched in 2018, according to its CEO, Joe Duffy, but the company still faces a rigorous battle against IaC incumbents -- mainly, Terraform-- and the perception that Pulumi's appeal is limited to niches within the market so far. There are many unit test examples demonstrating how to fake Pulumi’s resource provisioning logic with mocks, by passing the return value of the pulumi.WithMocks () function into the pulumi.RunErr () function. The main limitation with this default mock pulumi.RunInfo is that only a small number of the metadata is set. The trade-off in using a general purpose language is that, while you gain in expressiveness, you introduce the ability to generate non-deterministic resource graphs, which will result in broken deployments. This is solved by using Pulumi provided libraries to generate, for example, pseudo random data.
